Building Leaders, Strengthening Schools: Axium’s Training Programs

In the remote Transkei region of South Africa, where resources are scarce and educational opportunities are limited, Axium Education is making a lasting impact. But this mission goes far beyond textbooks and classrooms—it’s about empowering people. Through thoughtfully designed training programs, Axium’s Central Education Unit is equipping its staff with the leadership, teaching, and operational skills necessary to drive meaningful, sustainable change.

Leadership Development Training

Axium’s Leaders Training Weeks aim to nurture leadership at all levels, from emerging leaders to established leaders.

For emerging leaders, the program offers an intensive, hands-on experience designed to build confidence and develop real-world leadership skills.

Over the course of a week, participants dive into leadership theory, team-building activities, and practical scenarios that push them to step up and lead. This is not about sitting through lectures—it’s about learning by doing, with a focus on preparing future leaders to tackle the unique challenges of rural education.

Established leaders, on the other hand, dive into a shorter but equally powerful half-week session. These workshops fine-tune their leadership abilities and reinforce the values that drive Axium’s work. The emphasis is on leading teams effectively, fostering collaboration, and strengthening the organisational culture that keeps Axium’s mission alive.

Educator Training and Professional Development

In rural schools, quality teaching is everything. However, being an effective teacher is not just about knowing the curriculum—it’s about engaging students, managing the classroom, and promoting critical thinking. Axium’s Content and Pedagogy Training ensures that educators have the confidence and tools to do all of this effectively.

Throughout the year, Content Training deepens educators' understanding of the subjects they teach. These sessions, led by team leaders with support from Axium’s central curriculum team, break down the curriculum into practical strategies that teachers can implement in the classroom. The goal is consistency across all classrooms, ensuring that every student receives a high-quality education, no matter where they are.

But teaching goes beyond content delivery. Pedagogy Training, held during school holidays, focuses on classroom management, fostering meaningful discussions, and encouraging student engagement. This year, Axium put special emphasis on developing the habit of thoughtful discussion—not just in classrooms, but also in team meetings. By mastering these skills, teachers are better equipped to challenge students in ways that promote deeper learning.

Operational and Support Team Training

Behind every successful educational organisation is a strong, well-coordinated team. Axium’s Operations and HR Training is designed to strengthen these often-overlooked but crucial areas.

Throughout the year, Operations and HR staff participate in targeted training sessions to enhance their skills in logistics, human resources, and daily organisational tasks. Whether it’s managing the flow of resources or supporting the needs of educators, these sessions ensure that Axium’s mission is carried out smoothly and efficiently. Internal experts lead these workshops, with occasional support from external trainers, ensuring that everything runs like clockwork—even in the most challenging environments.

Axium’s Core Training Methodology

What sets Axium’s training programs apart is their grounded, practical approach. Instead of requiring staff to travel for external workshops, Axium brings the training to where the staff are—making it accessible and directly relevant, especially for those working in the rural Transkei.

At the heart of Axium’s training philosophy is the Yijonge, Yichaze, Yenze method—“See it, Name it, Do it.” First, participants observe a skill, then break it down into its essential parts, and finally, practice it themselves. This approach is hands-on, practical, and focused on real-world application, providing staff with real-time feedback and a clear understanding of how to implement what they’ve learned.

Axium also ensures that all training resources are tailored to the specific challenges of teaching in rural areas. The examples and tools are drawn from real schools facing the same limitations, making the training highly relevant and directly applicable to the daily realities of rural education.

Sustainability and School Management Training

Axium’s vision for change goes far beyond short-term improvements—it’s about creating long-term sustainability. The goal is to help schools become self-sufficient, capable of delivering high-quality education without relying on continuous external support. To achieve this, Axium works closely with School Management Teams (SMTs) at partner schools, teaching them the same coaching and development methods that Axium uses internally.

Through structured training sessions, SMTs learn how to coach teachers, provide meaningful feedback, and offer ongoing support. The Yijonge, Yichaze, Yenze approach is central here as well—SMTs practice these methods until they can confidently pass on the skills to their teams. By empowering these management teams to take ownership of their schools' development, Axium ensures its impact stretches far beyond its immediate presence.

In an environment where resources are scarce, Axium’s approach is practical, thoughtful, and deeply relevant to the challenges at hand. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, the organisation is laying the groundwork for sustainable change that will benefit rural South African communities for years to come.
